Located on the former site of the Republic Aviation aircraft factory in East Farmingdale, NY, The American Airpower Museum is dedicated to the history of aviation and military history. Its collection of artifacts and planes include a Waco bi-plane; a WWII-era Thunderbolt; a Korean War-era F-84 Thunderjet, Thunderstreak and Thunderflash; a Vietnam War-era F-105 Thunderchief and an A-10A Thunderbolt II, many of them displayed in the hangers and on the runways on which they were first put into service. Flight experience on a few planes may be had for an extra fee.

The Cold Spring Harbor Fire House Museum, located in the community's first Fire House (circa 1896), is home to a host of objects, historic equipment, vehicles, and photographs that document firefighting in this area of Long Island. Highlights include an 1852 Phenix Hand Tub, the department's first piece of equipment; a chemical truck and a fire engine from the early part of the 20th century; firefighting gear, including clothing and fire hats; original ledgers dating back to 1852; and a fire pole donated by the FDNY and remnant of steel from the World Trade Center.

Adopting the nickname given an area of Long Island home to a number of historic flights, this museum has eight galleries chronicling over 100 years of aerospace history. The collection includes 75 air and spacecraft—of special note, an actual Apollo Lunar Module—and a digital planetarium, which doubles as an IMAX theatre. There are over 30 hands-on exhibits, a half dozen cockpits to climb into, and many short films throughout the exhibits. There is a gift shop and café on the premises. The Nassau County Firefighter's Museum and Education Center may be also found within the same building.

The Garvies Point Museum & Preserve is located along Hempstead Harbor on the North Shore of Long Island. The museum features dioramas, permanent exhibits, and educational programs devoted to regional geology and Native-American archaeology. Changing exhibits cover a variety of natural history subjects. The preserve consists of 62 acres of glacial moraine covered by forests, thickets and meadows, through which are miles of marked trails, including some for the blind. The Heckscher Museum, founded in 1920, is home to more than 2,300 pieces by American and European artists. Housed in a Beaux-Arts building in Huntington, NY, its permanent collection includes works by artists as diverse as painters Lucas Cranach, William Merritt Chase, Frederic Church, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, George Inness, George Grosz, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Arthur Dove, along with photographers Berenice Abbott, Eadweard Muybridge, and Man Ray. The museum, which opened in 1994 on the grounds of the former Pratt estate in Glen Cove, NY, presents a detailed and comprehensive chronicle of the Holocaust in six galleries, using multimedia displays, photographs, artifacts, archival footage, and testimonies from local Survivors and Liberators. The Children's Memorial Garden, based on a design by the Olmsted brothers, memorializes the 1.5 million Jewish children murdered during the Holocaust and to all children who died during World War II. On the premises is the Louis Posner Memorial Library, open to the public by appointment only.

In compliance with the New York City mandate, all visitors over the age of 12 must show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination to enter the museum, and masks are required. Proof of vaccination may include a CDC Vaccination Card (or photo), NYC COVID Safe app, New York State Excelsior Pass, NYC Vaccination Record, or an official immunization record from outside New York City or the United States. Visitors over the age of 18 will also be asked to show a photo ID.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located on the Hudson River in Manhattan, features the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, some of the world's fastest jets, and a guided missile submarine. The ship is now a National Historic Landmark, having served tours of duty in World War II and the Vietnam War, and acted as a recovery vessel for the Gemini and Mercury space missions. In addition to more than two dozen authentically restored aircraft, the museum includes the Exploreum Interactive Hall, an interactive exhibit space; an 18,000 sq. ft. education center; “Growler,” the only American diesel-powered strategic missile submarine open to the public; and Pier 86.

Established in 1891, the New York Botanical Garden is located in the Bronx in New York City. The 250-acre site, which includes numerous outside gardens and the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory building are home to over one million plants. The International Plant Science Center houses the William & Lynda Steere Herbarium, which contains over seven million specimens, some of which date back three centuries. On the grounds, too, is the LuEsther T. Mertz Library which has over 550,000 physical volumes and 1,800 journal titles of botany-related texts in its collection. In recent years, the New York Botanical Garden has presented numerous art exhibitions. There are a number of dining options and a gift shop on the premises.

The New-York Historical Society was established in 1804, making it New York City's first museum. Its current home is one of the last Beaux-Arts style buildings built in the country. Permanent and changing exhibits draw upon the Society's holdings to highlight certain historical themes. The Society's collection contains over 1.6 million works, including art by Thomas Cole, Rembrandt Peale, and Gilbert Stuart, and all 435 of John James Audubon's extant preparatory watercolors for “Birds of America.” Among the institution's holdings are sculptor Elie Nadelman's collection of American folk art; one of the world's largest collections of Tiffany glasswork; George Washington's camp bed from Valley Forge; a collection of US newspapers from the 1700s; and many other important historical objects and artifacts. A relatively recent addition is a space dedicated to an interactive children's history museum. A restaurant and museum shop are on the premises.

Located in downtown Brooklyn, in the original Court St. station of the IND subway line, the New York Transit Museum opened in 1976 as a temporary exhibition connected to the country's Bicentennial celebrations. The historical artifacts on display related to the various transportation systems—subway, commuter rail, and bus—proved so popular that the New York City Transit Authority created a permanent museum. The collection includes historic bus, subway, and train cars, some of which are still operable, as well as equipment used to maintain the systems. Rotating and permanent exhibits focus on various aspects of public transportation in NYC, such as one which features over 50 detailed scale models of trolleys and work cars. A fully operational underground control room is on view. A gallery annex and store are located at Grand Central Station.

New York Transit Museum is dedicated to telling and preserving the stories of mass transportation in New York City. Housed underground in an authentic 1936 subway station in Downtown Brooklyn, the museum is home to a rotating selection of 20 vintage subway and elevated cars dating back to 1907.

Built in 1738, Raynham Hall is now a museum dedicated to telling the story of the Townsend family who occupied the house for decades, the lives of those they enslaved, the Revolutionary War, and the Culper Spy Ring. Though many additions were made to the building over the years, the front was restored to its original 18th century proportions in the 1950s. The museum—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—has an exhibition hall and many period rooms detailing daily life in the 18th and 19th centuries, including restored 19th century servants' quarters. It sits on two-thirds of an acre in the heart of Oyster Bay, which include gardens with historically accurate plantings that represent two historical periods connected to the life of the house—the Colonial and Victorian.

The Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor is dedicated to the art, science, history & culture of Long Island's whaling heritage. It is home to over 6,000 artifacts, including whalecraft, ship gear, and navigational aids; ship logs, journals, and local records; models of whaling ships; and paintings, lithographs, daguerreotypes, and photographs. A 19th century whaleboat with original gear, scrimshaw and whalebone art, a diorama of Cold Spring Harbor (circa 1850), and the exhibits “Thar She Blows: Whaling History on Long Island” and “If I Were a Whaler” are permanently on display. Special, temporary exhibits examine various aspects of whaling history and its connection to the community around the museum. The Museum is accessible to visitors who use wheelchairs.
