Founded in 1910, the 52-acre Brooklyn Botanic Garden is located near the Brooklyn Museum. Home to over 14,000 kinds specimens from all over the world, special gardens highlight various types of plants, with the botanic garden collections housed both indoors and out. Information about what's currently in bloom, suggested itineraries based on the time of the year, and a map of the grounds are available on the website. There is an art gallery, a small café, and gift store on the premises.

The Children's Museum of Manhattan provides children with experiences at the intersection of the arts, sciences and the humanities. Their exhibitions are updated each month with new activities and programs, some appropriate for children as young as under one year old. Exhibitions include a seasonal outdoor water exhibit and changing exhibits based on art, music, governance, New York City, and cultures from around the world. The museum is wheelchair accessible except for the lower level of the water exhibit. There is a gift shop on the premises.

The Gilded Age mansion in Manhattan that the Frick Collection occupies is being renovated, so the museum and library have temporarily taken up residence in the former home of the Whitney Museum a few blocks away. Visitors to Frick Madison will encounter paintings and sculptures by Bellini, Clodion, Gainsborough, Goya, Holbein, Houdon, Ingres, Piero della Francesca, Rembrandt, Titian, Turner, Velázquez, Vermeer, Whistler, among many others. The installation also spotlights the Frick's holdings of decorative arts and sculpture, as well as rarely seen works.

The Heckscher Museum, founded in 1920, is home to more than 2,300 pieces by American and European artists. Housed in a Beaux-Arts building in Huntington, NY, its permanent collection includes works by artists as diverse as painters Lucas Cranach, William Merritt Chase, Frederic Church, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, George Inness, George Grosz, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Arthur Dove, along with photographers Berenice Abbott, Eadweard Muybridge, and Man Ray. Located in midtown Manhattan, The Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1929 to collect and display “Modern” art, focusing primarily on Europe and North America. Today its encyclopedic collection from around the world includes almost 200,000 paintings; sculptures; prints; drawings; photographs; objects, models, and drawings related to design and architecture; and a significant number of films and movie stills. The Nassau County Museum of Art is located on the grounds of the former 145-acre Frick Estate in Roslyn Harbor, NY. The museum presents rotating exhibitions in its Georgian-style mansion that anchors the institution. In addition, there a sculpture garden, formal garden, and walking trails on the property. The permanent collection of more than 600 pieces is focused on 19th and 20th century American and European art. These include works by Pierre Bonnard, Auguste Rodin, Édouard Vuillard, Chaim Gross, Moses Soyer, Larry Rivers, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, and George Segal. Among the artists represented in the sculpture garden are Fernando Botero, Richard Serra, Mark DiSuvero, and Tom Otterness. The museum is accessible to all visitors and is equipped with both ramps and an elevator. Sensory tool kits designed to provide a multi-sensory museum experience for people with ASD and their families & caregivers are available at the admission desk.

The New-York Historical Society was established in 1804, making it New York City's first museum. Its current home is one of the last Beaux-Arts style buildings built in the country. Permanent and changing exhibits draw upon the Society's holdings to highlight certain historical themes. The Society's collection contains over 1.6 million works, including art by Thomas Cole, Rembrandt Peale, and Gilbert Stuart, and all 435 of John James Audubon's extant preparatory watercolors for “Birds of America.” Among the institution's holdings are sculptor Elie Nadelman's collection of American folk art; one of the world's largest collections of Tiffany glasswork; George Washington's camp bed from Valley Forge; a collection of US newspapers from the 1700s; and many other important historical objects and artifacts. A relatively recent addition is a space dedicated to an interactive children's history museum. A restaurant and museum shop are on the premises.

The Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium sits on the 43-acre grounds of an estate formerly belonging to William Vanderbilt II, who donated the property with the stipulation that it be used to display his collections. In addition to the 24-room Spanish revival mansion famous for its iron work which was built in the early part of the 20th century, now containing art and period furnishings, the complex includes buildings displaying the marine and natural history specimens and ethnographic objects collected on travels around the world, a one-mile nature trail, a learning center, and a planetarium which was added in 1971. There is a gift shop on the premises. To tour the mansion or see the show in the Planetarium requires an extra fee.

The Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor is dedicated to the art, science, history & culture of Long Island's whaling heritage. It is home to over 6,000 artifacts, including whalecraft, ship gear, and navigational aids; ship logs, journals, and local records; models of whaling ships; and paintings, lithographs, daguerreotypes, and photographs. A 19th century whaleboat with original gear, scrimshaw and whalebone art, a diorama of Cold Spring Harbor (circa 1850), and the exhibits “Thar She Blows: Whaling History on Long Island” and “If I Were a Whaler” are permanently on display. Special, temporary exhibits examine various aspects of whaling history and its connection to the community around the museum. The Museum is accessible to visitors who use wheelchairs.
