Located in downtown Brooklyn, in the original Court St. station of the IND subway line, the New York Transit Museum opened in 1976 as a temporary exhibition connected to the country's Bicentennial celebrations. The historical artifacts on display related to the various transportation systems—subway, commuter rail, and bus—proved so popular that the New York City Transit Authority created a permanent museum. The collection includes historic bus, subway, and train cars, some of which are still operable, as well as equipment used to maintain the systems. Rotating and permanent exhibits focus on various aspects of public transportation in NYC, such as one which features over 50 detailed scale models of trolleys and work cars.
